In November 2017, the federal government announced a National Housing Strategy for Canada.
Through a collaborative of national non-profit and private sector housing organizations, United Way Centraide called for a balanced policy response aimed at tackling housing poverty and homelessness. . The federal government listened, and the resulting strategy reflects the housing needs of Canada’s most vulnerable. .
For example, financial initiatives will boost the supply of market and non-market rental housing, social housing will be renewed and expanded, and Canadians with the deepest need will be supported through a new portable Canada Housing Benefit.
The housing strategy is a significant first step, but there is much work to be done. United Way Centraide will be there as the federal government begins its work to implement the strategy with the provinces, territories and municipalities.
Our goal is for each and every Canadian to have access to affordable, safe housing – a fundamental right for all our citizens.
