Every October 10, World Mental Health Day reminds us that mental health is shaped by access to care and the conditions of daily life: safe housing, reliable food, financial stability, supportive relationships and belonging. When those foundations are strained, distress can grow, and navigating one’s options can feel overwhelming. The need is clear. From January to July 2026, 211 navigators handled 361,391 interactions, including 313,058 calls and 31,962 texts and chats. As in 2025, Housing and shelter, along with mental health assessment and treatment, continue to remain among the top five needs identified in contacts made with the 211 service. Demand is also rising: Between January and August 2026, 21% of unmet needs identified through 211 contacts were related to housing and shelter, while 7% of unmet needs were related to mental health assessment and treatment, indicating that available services could not keep pace with rising demand.

These figures show why 211 matters for mental health.  Because mental distress is tied to basic needs like housing and food, and 211 connects people to holistic community support before crises escalate. It is free, confidential and available 24/7 in more than 150 languages, it provides an accessible route to vital services like counselling, crisis, housing, income, food and caregiver supports before needs escalate.

Across Canada, United Way Centraides work with cross-sector partners, all levels of government, donors and people with lived experience to strengthen community supports. They invest in mental health and addictions programs; support children, youth, families, caregivers and people experiencing isolation; improve local systems that deliver essential programs; and advocate for sustainable community services. They also help people access housing, food and income supports that directly affect mental well-being. In 2025, the network invested $38 million in mental health and addictions counselling, supports and services, reaching 1.1 million people across Canada.

On World Mental Health Day, turn awareness into action. Donate to your to support mental health in your community and help everyone find connection, stability and care when they need it most.
